Securing Our Future
Encouraging Good Behavior
Children learn behaviors and values mainly from their parents. Make sure your child is learning the right things!
Building Good Relationships
When you take the time to listen to your child, instead of brushing him or her off, you are building connections.
When you respond in a manner that validates his or her feelings instead of invalidating them, you are teaching her to be caring.
When you help him or her to choose appropriate actions, you are helping her to be more competent.
Our Role as Parents
Be Sensitive: We pick up the cues of our children and sense how they are feeling. We listen and empathize.
Responsive: We respond in ways that fit our child's cues. If the child is frightened, we comfort him. If he's intense, we calm him. But we don't excuse disrespectful behavior. Their limits are clear and enforced.
Reciprocal; There is give-and-take in the relationship. We as parents respect the child's emotions and teach him to consider thoughtfully the emotions of others.
Supportive and encouraging: We understand that learning to manage one's emotions takes time and effort. We must support and encourage our children as they practice.
These actions enhance children's development, foster a positive sense of self-esteem, and, most important, build healthy relationships.
The Twelve Disciplinary Elements
Pay attention to your child.
Respect your children and yourself.
Be reasonable, gentle, and firm.
Prevent and minimize problems through understanding, communication, and modeling.
Use positive reinforcement to encourage and reward proper behavior.
Teach ways to make choices.
Set reasonable personal expectations and goals for your child.
Set reasonable expectations for yourself and your family.
Communicate effective and reasonable limits.
Understand misbehavior.
Provide related, respectful, reasonable responses.
Be consistent.
I think being a parent is the hardest job one will ever hold and because of this we need to take and except all the help we can get.
A great website that I found on this subject is:

My husband and I raised four healthy children and we did the best that we could with the knowledge that we had from our parents. Back in the 60's, 70's and 80's I have to admit it was alot different parenting then it is today. We certainly didn't have the internet and reference books that are available today. Does anybody have any idea the why? Let us hear from you.
Thanks and God Bless

Sunny Day
Summer is here. The humming birds are starting to come back to there feeders along with the finches, orioles, cardinals, blue jays, grosbeaks, cowbirds, wrens etc etc. We strive to keep the feeders filled and in place for our flying friends but sometimes its a challenge with the squirrels
and the raccoons. They are a nuisance.
Just heard on CNN that Ted Kennedy is hospitalized with stroke symptoms. Praying for his recovery. The political arena is getting nasty. This is the hardest part of election year. Understanding how these candidates can be so cutting. I personally believe it will be between McCain and Obama. Who I will vote for remains a mystery, even to myself.

Spring is here!
Mothers Day this past Sunday and the Pankeys were our hosts for the occasion. All of the Bloch family were present with the exception of Cindy, Bob, Krista and Brandon. Cindy had to work and not sure about the other three. Our family is getting so large and harder to get everyone together so when we do we know we are blessed. Bob and Krista are buying a house in Hastings. Grandpa will go with them on a walk-through tomorrow and I believe they close on Saturday. They are excited. They have a townhome in Hastings now but with two golden retrievers they need more space as well as a yard to let them run.
Must tell you about our mini vacation a couple weeks ago. We left here in the motorhome on thursday morning. Stopped in Glenwood to see Dels cousin Marge. On to Graceville to see Aunt Joyce in the nursing home. Arrived at Bob and Ruths in Claire City around 7 pm. Thursday night. We called them about 15 miles out so they were surprised but happy to see us. Had a great visit and it was fun to see the Ebels and Gauklers also. Friday morning we went with Bob to the local cafe for breakfast and it wasn't long and the big snow flakes started coming down. Bob said "oh just a few flakes, it will pass us!" Well guess what? We had 15-18 inches of wet snow in the next 24 hours. We went to Nan and Kevins for dinner on Saturday night and got stuck with Bobs car infront of the motorhome coming home. Oh my! Sunday morning when it was time to pack up and leave for Fergus Falls, the big slideout stripped gears and would not go in. Kevin used his skidloader to lift and close the slideout. Needless to say we could not use it the rest of the trip. When we arrived in Fergus there was no where to park other then in the street in front of the Hutchins. All in all it was a good trip. We enjoyed our time with Lynn and Rog. Dels Mom is doing well in her new home. (VA Nursing Home) Her room is so much more roomier than the one she had at the Broen. She adjusts well for a soon to be 92 year old. Her birthday is tomorrow. Happy Birthday Mom!
Neighborhood bible study is winding down. Only one more session left. Beth Moore series at Hosanna is also coming to an end. Have so enjoyed the Psalms. Sounds like we will be having grandchildren a couple days a week to help out. That will be fun.
Until next time!

A Gray Day
Yesterday we had a little visitor for the day. Little Joe came at 10:30 am. and left with Mommy at 5:15 pm. He was very good. Had big smiles for us and is making sounds. Today he is 10 weeks old if my calculations are correct. Remember he was born on January 29th. Kari was able to get lots of work done in the office. Normally she takes Joe with. Sunday night we drove out to New Market to see the kids. It was nice driving out there without icy roads etc. Look forward to spring, summer and fall as we see more of our family. Del is off to Dr. Chu's eye clinic for his final checkup after his two cataract surgeries. He is very pleased with the outcome. I have to have my right eye done one of these days. Things are starting to get fuzzy. The joys of getting older. ha!
Big Sister is back in Oregon for a few weeks and then she will be back in Texas for a few weeks. She is quite the traveler. Keeps her young. She will help out with the grandchildren while daughter Jill goes on a couple business trips. The children have a nanny but its nice to have Grandma close by.
Thats it for this time!

Easter 2008
Arrived home about 9:30 am. Started getting ready for the family to come for brunch. Besides the 21 family members we had our son-in-laws father, sister and niece and nephew from Illinois as our guests. Everyone contributed to the meal and it was awesome. Kari made monkey bread that melted in your mouth. Our menu consisted of four different kinds of egg-bakes, fresh fruit, cheesy potatoes, muffins, orange juice, coffee, brownies, chocolate cake, chocolate pie and ofcourse the monkey bread. Our daughter-in-law Cindy had a birthday on Easter so we celebrated her birthday also.
It is so special to have all of our children and grandchildren here together. We are so blessed.
My brother Duane who was here for five weeks going through laser treatment on his feet, left for home last Friday noon after his final appointment and session with Dr. Kelm. Sorry to add that the laser treatment for the neuropathy in Duanes feet did not help. There will be some kind of refund. Duane is going to try accupuncture next.
Tom Burns and daughter Elizabeth were here on Saturday for a visit. Elizabeth is in her Junior year at Mankato State. She will make an excellent teacher when she is done with college. Plans to teach 4th graders.
Until next time,
Blessings on your day!

Remembering Jean McCormick

Jean McCormick, our neighbor and friend, passed away on thursday, March 13th, at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville. Jean was a special lady with a great faith in God and I know that it had been her faith and trust in God that saw her through some very tough times with her health. She was diagnosed with cancer back in September and given a short time to live. She never gave up and continued to fight the disease. I had the fortune of seeing her on Wednesday afternoon at the hospital. Her son Chris and
sister Patty were with her. She was her bubbly self and told me she would fight "this". A big hug and broad smile, I told her that her smile was worth so much. The best memories of Jean will be of her bubbly disposition and positive attitude. When my niece developed cancer three years ago, Jean was so compassionate and gave me a special cd and blanket that she had prayed on to give to Robin. This was so Jean. Always so concerned for others. She fought a good fight and we will never forget this beautiful person. God called her name! She is now with Him in eternity.
